✿ Frequently asked questions ✿

Q Will my bag arrive on the same day? +

Only when the exact service and route support it and you meet its cutoff. Confirm before handing over the bag; keep enough essentials until the promised delivery date.

Q Can I send it to an unstaffed apartment? +

Do not assume so. Ask the carrier and accommodation first. Yamato warns that its relevant travel service cannot deliver to unstaffed accommodation; a confirmed carrier-office pickup may be an alternative.

Q What if I lose a locker key or collection receipt? +

Contact the locker operator, storage desk or carrier using the details shown at the location or on your records. Have the location, bag description and booking details ready; do not try to force a locker open.

1Choose storage or delivery

A traveler asking hotel staff about luggage

For sightseeing before check-in, ask your booked hotel about storage or compare a station locker and staffed counter. For a city change, delivery may save you from carrying a large suitcase through transfers. Make the choice from when you need the bag, not just its weight.

Storage keeps the bag at one place; delivery moves it but takes time. Neither availability nor hotel acceptance is automatic. A small overnight bag can make a one-night detour easier if the courier schedule and receiving hotel allow it.

Remember this!
  • Decide where you will collect the bag.
  • Choose by the next time you need it.

  1. A few hours in one area: look for storage near your return route.
  2. Moving to another hotel: compare confirmed delivery time with your stay dates.
  3. Need everything tonight: carry it unless same-day delivery is explicitly available and confirmed.

2Use a locker with a backup

A traveler placing a suitcase inside a station locker

Find a locker that fits without forcing the door. Check the posted fee, charging cycle, maximum storage period and hours when the area is accessible. A locker inside ticket gates can be awkward if you return without a valid ticket. If large lockers are full, use a staffed counter or ask your hotel.

Do not assume every locker is open around the clock or accepts the same payment method. Photograph the location and locker number for yourself, and keep the receipt or key. Never leave an unattended bag beside a full locker bank.

Remember this!
  • Check access and the final collection time.
  • Keep the key, IC card or receipt safe.
See the steps and checks
  1. Read the displayed rules before payment; ask staff if the charging cycle is unclear.
  2. After payment, confirm the door is locked and retain the unlock method.
  3. For IC-key lockers, collect with the same card/device and avoid moving or refunding that card first.

3Confirm who can receive it

A traveler confirming luggage acceptance with hotel reception

Before sending to the next hotel, ask whether it accepts courier luggage for your booking and on which dates. Give the name used on the reservation, arrival date and bag count. For an unstaffed apartment, do not assume a courier can leave the bag; arrange an eligible staffed collection point with the carrier instead.

A confirmed recipient prevents a bag arriving where nobody can accept it. Domestic residents sending to home should likewise choose an arrival date when it can be received. A convenience store that accepts outgoing parcels is not automatically a luggage pickup point.

Remember this!
  • Get the destination’s acceptance first.
  • Match the recipient name to the booking.
See the steps and checks
  1. Ask the hotel about fees, storage limits and whether prepaid delivery is required.
  2. Confirm the complete hotel name, postal address, phone number and reservation name.
  3. If reception is unstaffed, ask the carrier which office and collection procedure can be used before addressing the bag.

4Pack, label and keep the receipt

Packing a small overnight bag beside a larger suitcase

Measure and weigh the bag, then ask the counter to confirm the service, fee and expected arrival. Fill out the waybill or supported online form with the receiving address and contact details; describe the contents accurately. Keep the tracking number and sender’s receipt until collection.

Keep your passport, cash, valuables, essential medication, chargers and enough clothes with you. A closed suitcase is not a promise that every item inside is acceptable; check the carrier’s exclusions, packing rules and compensation limits.

Remember this!
  • Keep essentials in your day bag.
  • Retain the tracking number and receipt.
See the steps and checks
  1. Take out anything needed before the confirmed delivery date.
  2. Check recipient details, requested delivery date and bag count with staff before handover.
  3. Photograph the bag and your receipt privately, then use the carrier’s tracking service if needed.

5Allow time, especially for flights

Discussing suitcase delivery at a staffed hotel counter

Hotel delivery is not automatically same-day; availability and transit time depend on origin, destination, cutoff and service. For Yamato’s standard Airport TA-Q-BIN, the published sending deadline is generally at least two days before departure, or three in some areas. Confirm the actual counter’s deadline and eligible airport.

Airport delivery has a separate collection process. Sending it “to the airport” is not enough: check the terminal, counter, opening hours and flight details. Keep what you need until departure, and allow time to collect before airline check-in.

Remember this!
  • Confirm the deadline for your exact route.
  • Save the airport collection point and receipt.
See the steps and checks
  1. Give departure airport, terminal, flight date and other details requested by the carrier.
  2. Ask when to send and where and when to collect; do not assume a regular hotel service follows airport rules.
  3. Check tracking early enough to contact the carrier if delayed, and bring the collection receipt.

6If you carry it on the train

An illustration of travelers with luggage beside a Shinkansen

Check the operator’s rules for the actual train. On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, bags whose three dimensions total more than 160 cm and up to 250 cm require the appropriate oversized-baggage seat reservation. A large suitcase being airline-compliant does not settle its train requirements.

Keep doors and aisles clear and secure wheels. Do not use the space behind another seat without the required reservation. If suitable space is unavailable, ask about another train or delivery; do not rely on paying a fee to guarantee boarding.

Remember this!
  • Measure before reserving your train.
  • Reserve the required luggage space.
See the steps and checks
  1. Add length, width and height, including protruding parts as instructed by the operator.
  2. Check your train’s weight, size and baggage-space rules; other services can differ.
  3. Compare carrying with delivery using the complete hotel-to-hotel route, not only station-to-station time.
